League of Legends Honor system: Levels, rewards, progress, and Honor 5

by RiftDaily Admin | Oct 4, 2026 | Guides

The League of Legends Honor system is Riot Games' behavior and sportsmanship system, with Honor 3 as the neutral starting level, Honor 4 and 5 for consistently positive players, and Honor 1 and 2 for accounts with active behavioral penalties.

Under the current LoL Honor system, your level affects chat access, ping and emote limits, Battle Pass XP rewards, ranked reward eligibility, and special Honor 5 perks. The most important change for returning players is that Honor no longer uses the old seasonal grind from level 2 through checkpoints. Since Patch 25.04, Honor is evaluated dynamically from recent behavior and does not reset when a new season begins.

That means a lot of older information is now wrong. Honor checkpoints, Honor Orbs, Honor Capsules, seasonal Honor resets, and the Honor 5 Token Shop are no longer part of the current League of Legends Honor system. This guide explains how Honor works in 2026, how to increase your Honor level, how long progression takes, what Honor 5 unlocks, and what happens after a penalty.

This guide reflects Riot's current Honor rules, including the 2025 Honor overhaul, 2026 Honor Objectives, the social-panel redemption tracker, and the latest status of Team Voice.

League of Legends Honor system explained in 30 seconds

The League of Legends Honor system has five levels. Everyone starts at Honor 3, which represents neutral account standing. Consistently positive players can rise to Honor 4 and Honor 5, while active behavioral penalties can reduce an account to Honor 1 or Honor 2.

  • Honor 1-2: penalty levels with communication and reward restrictions.
  • Honor 3: the neutral baseline and starting level.
  • Honor 4: positive standing with better Honor rewards.
  • Honor 5: the highest level, with Honor skins, targeted ally pings, the Honor recall, and the best Honor reward rate.
  • No seasonal reset: your Honor level carries across seasons.
  • No checkpoints: Honor checkpoints, Orbs, Capsules, and Tokens belong to the old system.

Riot's official League of Legends Honor guide describes Honor 3 as the neutral home where normal communication tools are available. Honor 4 and Honor 5 are intended for players who repeatedly have a positive impact on their games, rather than players who simply avoid punishment.

League of Legends Honor levels and requirements

There are five current League of Legends Honor levels. Unlike the previous League Honor system, you are not expected to climb through every level from the bottom. Honor 1 and Honor 2 represent accounts with active penalties, while Honor 3 is the normal starting point.

Current League of Legends Honor levels affect communication limits, Honor rewards, and ranked reward eligibility.

Team chat and party chat remain available at every Honor level. The ping and emote numbers in the table show how many can be used within five seconds before a temporary communication lockout applies.

Animated League of Legends Honor level 1 emblem
Honor 1 is the most restricted level in the current League of Legends Honor system.

Honor level 1

Honor 1 indicates an active behavioral penalty. You keep team and party chat, but lose access to all chat, champion select chat, and post-game chat. Your ping allowance falls to two uses within five seconds, and your emote allowance is also limited to two.

Honor 1 also blocks Honor BXP drops and ranked season rewards. In practical terms, it is the most restrictive level in the current League of Legends Honor system.

Animated League of Legends Honor level 2 emblem
Honor 2 has fewer restrictions than Honor 1, but it still represents an active penalty.

Honor level 2

Honor 2 is another penalty level, although some communication privileges return. Champion select and post-game chat are available, but all chat remains disabled. You can use four pings and two emotes within a five-second window before the temporary rate limit applies.

Honor 2 remains below the main reward threshold. You do not receive Honor BXP drops, do not earn current Honor Objective points, and are not eligible for ranked season rewards.

Animated League of Legends Honor level 3 emblem
Honor 3 is the neutral starting point and the most important baseline for normal account standing.

Honor level 3

Honor 3 is the neutral baseline in the League of Legends Honor system. New players start here, standard chat features are available, Honor BXP drops begin, Honor Objectives can progress, and the account is eligible for ranked season rewards.

This is the key difference from the old LoL Honor level requirements. Honor 3 is no longer something every account must grind toward from Honor 2. It is the current starting point.

Animated League of Legends Honor level 4 emblem
Honor 4 reflects a recent pattern of positive, respectful, and cooperative play.

Honor level 4

Honor 4 is for players whose recent behavior is consistently positive. Honor BXP drops become more frequent, Honor Objective points accumulate twice as quickly as they do at Honor 3, and the rapid-use emote allowance increases.

Honor 4 is not permanent. The League of Legends Honor system evaluates current behavior, so maintaining a high level means continuing the positive communication and coordination that helped you reach it.

Animated League of Legends Honor level 5 emblem
Honor 5 is the highest current standing and unlocks the full set of Honor-specific perks.

Honor level 5

Honor level 5 LoL is the highest tier in the League of Legends Honor system. Honor 5 gets the most frequent Honor BXP drops, earns Honor Objective points ten times faster than Honor 3, unlocks targeted ally pings, activates the Honor recall, unlocks Honor skins, increases the emote allowance, and provides an additional post-game Honor vote.

There is no published number of matches, votes, or hidden points that guarantees Honor 5. Riot intentionally uses a dynamic assessment of recent behavior instead of showing a traditional XP bar for normal Honor progression.

How to get Honor in League of Legends

The main way to get Honor in League of Legends is through post-game Honor votes, but votes are not the only factor. Riot also says positive chat, good communication, and team coordination can contribute to your standing in the League of Legends Honor system.

How post-game Honor works

The current post-game Honor LoL system lets you recognize players on either team. You can give only one vote to the same player after a match, and a vote cannot be retracted once submitted.

ActionHonor votes gained
Play a match+1 vote
Receive Honor in the previous match+1 vote
Be Honor level 5+1 vote
Unused Honor votes carry between matches, but you can hold no more than four at once.

If you skip the Honor screen, unused votes carry forward. Because the bank is capped at four, there is little benefit in sitting at the maximum instead of recognizing players who made the match better.

Can you Honor enemies?

Yes. The current League of Legends Honor system allows post-game votes for players on either team. Opponent Honor returned as Riot moved away from the older setup where the screen mainly focused on choosing a teammate and assigning a category.

Does honoring premade teammates count?

Yes. You can honor teammates in your premade group, and Riot's current Honor guide says giving an Honor vote to someone in your premade grants them a boost to their Honor. Advice claiming premade Honor never counts is outdated under the current League of Legends Honor system.

The modern voting system makes more sense when you compare it with the older "one teammate, one category" setup. This overview shows how League moved toward multiple stored votes, opponent Honor, and behavior-based progression.

The New Honor System Explained: Good & Bad

The important change is that simply playing a huge number of matches without a punishment is no longer intended to be the main path upward. The League of Legends Honor system now distinguishes neutral behavior at Honor 3 from the consistently positive behavior expected at Honor 4 and Honor 5.

How to increase Honor level in LoL and reach Honor 5

If you want to know how to increase Honor level in LoL, focus on building a consistent pattern of positive games rather than trying to hit a hidden match quota. Riot does not publish exact League Honor level requirements for moving from Honor 3 to 4 or from Honor 4 to 5.

  1. Play to win without disruptive behavior. Avoid griefing, intentional feeding, AFK behavior, harassment, and other conduct that can trigger account penalties.
  2. Communicate information that helps. Useful pings, objective calls, short warnings, and clear coordination are more valuable than arguing about mistakes.
  3. Stay constructive when the game is going badly. Remaining useful during a difficult loss says more about your behavior than being friendly only while winning.
  4. Use your Honor votes. Recognize teammates or opponents who communicate well, stay calm, or improve the match for everyone.
  5. Do not retaliate against toxic players. Muting a disruptive player and continuing to coordinate is safer than joining an argument that can create problems for your own account.
  6. Keep it consistent. The League of Legends Honor system reflects recent behavior, so a few unusually friendly games are not a guaranteed shortcut to Honor 5.

Efficient controls can make good communication easier. RiftDaily's guide to the best League of Legends settings covers pings, hotkeys, and other options that let you communicate without losing focus during a fight.

Do you need to type in chat to reach Honor 5?

You do not need to fill chat with messages, but total silence is not necessarily the best way to maintain a high Honor level. Riot specifically lists positive communication and team coordination as signals that can contribute to Honor, and it says players at Honor 4 or 5 can eventually fall back toward Honor 3 if the positive behavior that got them there disappears.

That does not mean you should force conversation. Purposeful pings, useful calls, sensible responses, and calm coordination are better than constant chatter. RiftDaily's League of Legends team voice guide covers Riot's plans to expand voice communication beyond premade parties.

As of October 4, 2026, the broader Team Voice rollout has been postponed. Riot originally planned to expand Team Voice to North America and Oceania in Patch 26.20, but announced in Patch 26.19 that it needed more testing and no longer had a target patch. Riot has said that speaking access will be tied to Honor level when the wider feature eventually launches, so Team Voice should not yet be treated as a standard live Honor perk.

How long does Honor take in LoL?

There is no fixed answer to how long Honor takes in LoL. Riot does not publish an exact number of matches, votes, days, or hidden Honor points required to reach Honor 4 or Honor 5. Normal LoL Honor progress is evaluated dynamically from your recent behavior.

There are also two different kinds of progress that players often mix together: your actual Honor level, which has hidden promotion requirements, and seasonal Honor Objectives, which use visible points.

Honor level progress has no public timer

If you are trying to calculate how many games it takes to move from Honor 3 to Honor 5, there is no reliable formula. Two players can play the same number of matches and progress differently because the League of Legends Honor system evaluates behavior rather than acting like a simple experience bar.

If you want to put the amount of play involved into perspective, RiftDaily's LoL time spent guide covers ways to estimate how much time you have spent playing League.

Honor Objective progress can be calculated

Honor Objectives are different from Honor level progress. Each seasonal Act currently contains two sequential objectives. Each one requires 1,200 Honor points and awards 50 Battle Pass XP plus one Hextech Chest and Key.

Honor levelHonor points per minuteEligible playtime for 1,200 pointsEligible playtime for both objectives
Honor 1-20Cannot progressCannot progress
Honor 3120 hours40 hours
Honor 4210 hours20 hours
Honor 5102 hours4 hours
These calculations use eligible minutes played. Queue, lobby, and other time outside the match are not included.

This is one of the clearest practical advantages of Honor 5. Based purely on eligible minutes played, an Honor 5 player completes the same 1,200-point objective ten times faster than an Honor 3 player.

League of Legends Honor rewards in 2026

Current League of Legends Honor rewards are built around communication privileges, Battle Pass progression, Honor Objectives, ranked reward eligibility, and permanent cosmetics. The old Capsule-and-Orb progression track has been retired.

The League of Legends Honor rewards improve as an account moves above the neutral Honor 3 baseline.

Honor level 5 LoL rewards

The biggest permanent LoL Honor 5 rewards are the Honor skins. Under the current League of Legends Honor system, the first time you reach Honor 5 you are permanently awarded Three Honors Malzahar, Three Honors Akshan, Three Honors Shen, Grey Warwick, Medieval Twitch, and the applicable Honor chromas for Warwick and Twitch.

Three Honors Akshan is part of the exclusive Honor cosmetic collection awarded through Honor 5.

Three Honors Shen completes the Three Honors trio included in the current reward pool. If you want to examine League cosmetics outside a match, RiftDaily's LoL model viewer guide covers tools for viewing champion and skin models.

Honor recall in League of Legends

The Honor recall League of Legends players see at the highest level is an Honor 5-exclusive visual effect. It gives Honor 5 a visible in-game reward instead of limiting the League of Legends Honor system to profile standing and account rewards.

Targeted ally pings

Honor 5 also unlocks targeted ally pings. Riot reserves these pings for the highest Honor level, tying an additional communication feature to a player's current positive standing.

Battle Pass XP and Honor Objectives

Honor 3, 4, and 5 can receive Honor BXP drops. The drops become slightly more frequent at Honor 4 and more frequent again at Honor 5. Each seasonal Act also includes the two 1,200-point Honor Objectives described above, with 50 BXP and a Hextech Chest and Key awarded for each completed objective.

These League of Legends Honor rewards are earned through behavior and play rather than purchases. If you are comparing free account rewards with cosmetics bought over the years, RiftDaily's LoL money spent guide explains how to review League spending separately.

Honor and ranked season rewards

Honor 3 is the current minimum standing shown by Riot for ranked season reward eligibility. Honor 1 and Honor 2 are not eligible, while Honor 3, 4, and 5 are.

For the 2025 end-of-season rewards distributed in early 2026, Riot required players to finish at Honor 3 or higher and complete the ranked objective of 15 wins. Specific seasonal ranked requirements can change, so the important Honor takeaway is to stay at Honor 3 or above and verify that season's ranked objective before rewards are locked in.

Honor should not be confused with champion progression. League of Legends Champion Mastery tracks your experience and performance with individual champions, while the League of Legends Honor system focuses on behavior and social interaction across games.

Honor checkpoints, Honor Orbs, Capsules, and Tokens are gone

One of the biggest sources of confusing League of Legends Honor system information is mixing the old progression model with the current one. Honor checkpoints LoL, Honor Capsules LoL, and Honor Orbs LoL were real features, but Riot removed them when it rebuilt Honor in Patch 25.04.

What happened to Honor Capsules and Honor Orbs?

Honor Capsules were previously awarded when reaching certain full Honor levels, while Honor Orbs were associated with checkpoints. Depending on the period, those rewards could include key fragments, champion shards, ward skins, emotes, and other loot.

The current League of Legends Honor system no longer uses Honor Capsules or Honor Orbs. Riot replaced that separate reward track with Battle Pass XP drops and current Honor Objectives.

What happened to Honor 5 Tokens?

The Honor 5 Token Shop was retired. Starting with Patch 25.06, any remaining Honor 5 Tokens were converted into 1,050 Orange Essence each. New Honor Tokens are not part of current LoL Honor rewards.

Does LoL Honor reset each season?

No. There is no current LoL Honor reset when a new season begins. Riot removed seasonal resets in Patch 25.04, so your League of Legends Honor system standing carries forward and changes based on your behavior instead of automatically returning to an earlier point.

This replaced the older Honor level reset League of Legends players remember, where high-Honor accounts were pushed back toward Honor 2 and its checkpoints at the start of a new season.

The old Stayed Cool, Great Shotcalling, and GG Honor categories

The three familiar post-game categories are historical too. For years, players selected one teammate and chose between Stayed Cool, Great Shotcalling, and GG <3. Riot later shifted to the current voting system, where players can use stored votes on eligible teammates and opponents without selecting one of those categories.

Historical Stayed Cool League of Legends Honor badge
Stayed Cool recognized a teammate who remained calm and made a difficult game less frustrating.
Historical Great Shotcalling League of Legends Honor badge
Great Shotcalling recognized useful leadership, strategy, and team direction.
Historical GG heart League of Legends Honor badge
GG <3 was the broad recognition option for a friendly teammate who made the match enjoyable.

This older explanation is useful for understanding why so many League screenshots and guides still show category-based voting, even though those mechanics no longer describe the current League of Legends Honor system.

Honor Explained - League of Legends

The badge animations are another useful piece of Honor history. The visual language survived for years even as Riot repeatedly changed the progression and reward rules behind it.

LoL Animations - Honor badges

For current play, the parts that matter are your present Honor level, recent behavior, post-game vote bank, reward eligibility, and any restrictions shown in the League client.

LoL Honor locked, penalties, and recovery

LoL Honor restrictions apply when an account receives an active behavioral penalty. In the current League of Legends Honor system, Honor 1 and Honor 2 are the penalty levels, and both reduce communication access and block several rewards.

What does Honor progress locked mean?

"LoL Honor locked" or "Honor progress locked" is language players often use for a period where an active behavioral restriction prevents normal progression and reward access. The modern client provides much more detail than older versions did, including your current Honor standing, active restrictions, and redemption requirements.

Since Patch 26.12, Honor and active penalty information appears directly in the League social panel. You can use it to check your current standing, redemption progress, restrictions, and the actions required to restore good standing.

What Honor level do you get after a penalty?

An active behavioral penalty can place an account at Honor 1 or Honor 2. The exact Honor level after a penalty depends on the restriction Riot applies. Those levels are not normal steps every player needs to climb through, they represent a restricted account state.

This is why articles that still describe Honor level 0, Honor 1, and Honor 2 as part of the ordinary modern progression ladder can be misleading. Riot's current League of Legends Honor system feature table runs from Honor 1 through Honor 5 and identifies levels 1 and 2 as active penalty states.

How do chat restrictions affect Honor?

A behavioral penalty can reduce both Honor and communication access. At Honor 1, all chat, champion select chat, and post-game chat are unavailable. At Honor 2, champion select and post-game chat return, but all chat remains unavailable.

Team chat and party chat remain accessible across all five levels in Riot's current table. Lower Honor levels also have tighter ping and emote rate limits, so LoL Honor restrictions affect more than the chat box.

How Honor redemption works

If your Honor falls because of disruptive behavior, Riot may assign an Honor Restriction with redemption requirements. The League client can show how many matches you need to complete without further reports before returning to good standing.

  • Complete the account-specific match requirements shown in the client.
  • Avoid additional reports and disruptive behavior while the restriction is active.
  • Successful redemption restores the account to at least Honor 3.
  • You are not guaranteed to return immediately to Honor 4 or Honor 5.
  • A new penalty during an active Honor Restriction removes the redemption progress already made.
  • Repeated Honor Restrictions can require more games to regain good standing.

If your client is failing to display Honor or account information correctly, first rule out a wider service problem with RiftDaily's LoL server status guide. For a penalty, restriction, or account-specific question, use League of Legends Support.

Does Honor decay, reset, or drop when you stop playing?

Taking a break does not lower your Honor. Riot says the League of Legends Honor system will not reduce your standing simply because time passes while you are inactive.

That is different from continuing to play while no longer demonstrating the positive behavior associated with Honor 4 or Honor 5. High Honor reflects recent conduct, so players at the top levels can eventually slide back toward Honor 3 if their in-game behavior no longer meets that standard.

Will Riot warn you before a normal Honor demotion?

Yes. Riot says the client can warn a high-Honor player when their behavior is putting them at risk of dropping to the previous level. That gives the player an opportunity to improve before the normal behavior-based demotion happens.

Does Honor transfer between servers?

Riot's current Honor guide says your Honor level travels with you when you transfer servers. Because account-transfer and ranked-reward rules can have separate seasonal restrictions, check the current transfer rules before moving regions close to an end-of-season reward cutoff.

Does changing your League name reset Honor?

No. The League of Legends Honor system is tied to account behavior, not the text of your Riot ID. Changing your name does not create a fresh Honor progression track. If the name itself is what you want to update, RiftDaily's LoL name change guide covers that separate process.

What if you return after years away?

If you stopped playing before the 2025 overhaul, expect Honor to look very different. The current League of Legends Honor system uses Honor 3 as its neutral baseline instead of the old Honor 2 checkpoint grind. If you also need the current client, start with RiftDaily's League of Legends download guide.

How the League of Legends Honor system changed over time

The League of Legends Honor system has been redesigned several times. That history explains why search results can contradict each other even when an older article was accurate on the day it was published.

PeriodMajor Honor change
2012The original Honor system launched to let players recognize positive behavior.
2017Honor was rebuilt around levels, the Stayed Cool, Great Shotcalling, and GG <3 categories, checkpoints, and progression rewards.
2024Riot expanded post-game voting, brought back opponent Honor, and moved away from the old category-based voting screen.
Patch 25.04, 2025Honor 3 became the neutral baseline, progression shifted to dynamic recent-behavior evaluation, checkpoints and seasonal resets disappeared, and communication privileges became tied more closely to Honor.
Patch 25.06, 2025Remaining Honor 5 Tokens were converted into 1,050 Orange Essence each.
Patch 26.12, 2026Current Honor, active penalties, restrictions, and redemption progress were added to the League social panel.
September 2026Riot announced plans to tie speaking access in expanded Team Voice to Honor level.
Patch 26.19, 2026The wider Team Voice rollout was postponed, with no replacement target patch announced at the time.
The modern League of Legends Honor system is substantially different from the checkpoint-based version used from 2017 through early 2025.

League of Legends Honor system myths that are no longer true

"Every account starts at Honor 2"

Not anymore. The current League of Legends Honor system starts players at Honor 3. Honor 2 now represents an account under an active behavioral penalty.

"You need three checkpoints to reach the next level"

Outdated. Riot removed Honor checkpoints in Patch 25.04. Current LoL Honor progress uses a dynamic assessment of recent behavior instead of three visible checkpoints between levels.

"Honor resets every season"

False. Seasonal resets ended with the 2025 League of Legends Honor system overhaul. Your Honor can still rise or fall, but a new season does not automatically reset it.

"Only post-game votes increase Honor"

False. Post-game voting is Riot's biggest listed source of Honor, but positive chat, good communication, and team coordination can also contribute.

"Honor from premade teammates does not count"

Outdated under Riot's current guide. You can Honor someone in your premade group, and Riot says that vote grants them a boost to their Honor.

"Honor 5 is permanent"

No. Honor 5 reflects current and recent behavior. The League of Legends Honor system can move a player back toward Honor 3 if the consistently positive behavior associated with Honor 4 and Honor 5 disappears.

"You need Honor 5 for ranked rewards"

No. Riot's current Honor feature table lists Honor 3 as the minimum eligible level for ranked season rewards. Honor 4 and Honor 5 provide additional Honor perks, but they are not required for the basic Honor eligibility threshold.

"The fastest way to gain Honor is to spam chat"

No. Useful communication matters, but flooding chat is not the goal. Calm calls, relevant pings, teamwork, and sportsmanlike behavior are much closer to what the League of Legends Honor system is designed to reward.

Frequently asked questions about League of Legends Honor system

What is the starting Honor level in League of Legends?

The starting level is Honor 3. It is the neutral baseline in the current League of Legends Honor system. Honor 1 and Honor 2 represent accounts with active behavioral penalties rather than normal starting levels.

How do you get Honor in League of Legends?

You get Honor primarily through post-game Honor votes. Riot also says positive chat, good communication, and team coordination contribute. Playing a match gives you one vote to spend, receiving Honor in the previous match gives another, and Honor 5 supplies an additional vote.

How many Honor votes can you save?

You can bank up to four Honor votes. Unused votes carry into later matches, but you cannot hold more than four at one time.

Can you Honor enemies and premade teammates?

Yes. The current League of Legends Honor system allows you to Honor players on either team, including people in your premade group. Riot's current Honor guide says a vote given to a premade teammate also boosts their Honor.

How long does it take to reach Honor level 5?

Riot does not publish a fixed number of games, votes, hours, or days required to reach Honor 5. The League of Legends Honor system evaluates recent behavior dynamically, so there is no universal Honor 3-to-5 timetable.

Does League of Legends Honor reset every season?

No. Riot removed the seasonal LoL Honor reset in Patch 25.04. Your current Honor standing carries forward and can rise or fall based on your behavior.

Are Honor Capsules, Honor Orbs, and checkpoints still available?

No. Honor Capsules LoL, Honor Orbs LoL, checkpoints, and Honor Tokens belong to the old system. The current League of Legends Honor system uses Honor BXP drops, Honor Objectives, communication privileges, ranked reward eligibility, and Honor 5 cosmetics instead.

What are the current Honor 5 rewards?

Current LoL Honor 5 rewards include the highest Honor Objective point rate, the most frequent Honor BXP drops, targeted ally pings, the Honor recall, an extra post-game Honor vote, and the Honor cosmetic collection, including Three Honors Malzahar, Akshan, and Shen, Grey Warwick, Medieval Twitch, and applicable chromas.

Can Honor drop if you stop playing League?

No. Inactivity alone does not lower Honor. However, an active Honor 4 or Honor 5 player can move back toward Honor 3 if their recent in-game behavior no longer meets the positive standard associated with those higher levels.

Keep your Honor high without turning it into a grind

The modern League of Legends Honor system is much easier to understand once you separate it from the old checkpoint model. Honor 3 is neutral standing, Honor 4 and 5 recognize consistently positive play, and Honor 1 and 2 indicate active penalties. There is no seasonal Honor reset, no current Honor Orb or Capsule grind, and no published match total that guarantees Honor 5.

The most reliable approach is simple: play to win, communicate useful information, use your post-game Honor votes, avoid pointless arguments, and keep that behavior consistent. If communication is your weak point, revisit RiftDaily's best League settings and League team voice guide.
