League Classic Roadmap reveals champions, Council Voting and rune updates

by Majbritt Dybdal Bjerre | Jul 29, 2026 | News, Updates

The League Classic Roadmap has been revealed just as Riot Games prepares to open its nostalgia-driven mode to all players on Wednesday, July 29.

The first schedule confirms that League Classic will not be a static throwback. Riot is planning balance updates on every patch, a staged champion rollout, the first round of Council Voting, additional rune options and a second act for the Classic Pass by early October.

Patch 26.15 starts the mode with 60 champions, the Classic Summoner's Rift map, Classic Pass Act I and a Seasonal Summoner's Journey. The roadmap then moves quickly, with three more champions set for Patch 26.16 on August 12 and the first Council Voting window arriving in Patch 26.17 on August 26.

League Classic Roadmap starts with 60 champions and regular balance updates

League Classic is not trying to recreate one specific old patch exactly. Instead, Riot is using Season 3 as the foundation while bringing back a mix of older champion kits, classic items, runes, masteries and the original Summoner’s Rift style.

Instead of launching one locked version of old League, Riot is treating Classic like a live mode with its own update cadence. The official roadmap says balance changes are planned for every patch, which suggests Riot wants to protect the mode's old-school pacing without letting clearly dominant picks stay untouched for too long.

For players tracking League updates, the first wave is also unusually dense. The launch patch is not only the arrival of the mode itself, but also the start of Classic-specific progression and monetization through the Act I pass and Seasonal Summoner's Journey.

Akali, Shen and Kennen appear to be the next League Classic champions

Riot has not officially named the three champions coming in Patch 26.16, but SkinSpotlights reported that Akali, Shen and Kennen were found ahead of the update. If accurate, the first post-launch champion wave will be entirely Ionian and entirely energy-based.

That would be a notable first choice for Classic. Akali, Shen and Kennen all bring older League identities that are very different from modern champion design. Their arrival would also test how Riot handles older kits in a mode where mobility, mana costs, crowd control and burst windows are intentionally closer to early League.

The roadmap only says three champions are coming on August 12, so the identities should still be treated as unofficial until Riot confirms them directly. However, the trio has already become one of the main discussion points around the first League Classic news cycle.

Council Voting gives selected players a say in future Classic changes

The biggest new system on the League Classic Roadmap is Council Voting. Riot has described The Council as a community voting system designed to help guide the future of Classic, rather than leaving every champion, skin or feature decision entirely internal.

According to the details shared so far, not every account will automatically be part of the Council. Players with older accounts and a strong conduct record, including accounts without bans, are expected to be invited to vote on changes or upcoming features for the mode.

The first Council Voting round lands with Patch 26.17 on August 26. A second round is scheduled for Patch 26.19 on September 23. That timing gives Riot a way to use early player sentiment before adding more champions in Patch 26.18 and before moving into Classic Pass Act II in Patch 26.20.

Riot's own Classic dev blog also frames the mode as a mix of old League identity and modern support. The result is not a museum version of League, but a separate experience that can still be adjusted as players discover what is actually strong in 2026.

Additional runes arrive after launch

Patch 26.17 will also add more rune options. That is important because the launch version of Classic brings back an older rune and mastery structure, but the starting rune pool appears limited compared with the full system many longtime players remember.

Riot has said players will unlock runes and masteries by playing Classic, with faster progression than the original version and default pages available from the start. Adding more rune options after the first month gives Riot room to keep early balance under control before expanding the customization that defined older League builds.

That slower rollout may also help newer or returning players. The old rune system was powerful, but it could also be confusing, expensive and easy to optimize poorly. A staged release gives Classic a clearer early meta before players begin pushing more specialized pages.

Classic match history will not be available through Riot API

One separate update from Riot's developer relations account is already affecting expectations around Classic stats. Riot has indicated that League Classic match history data will not be available through the Riot API.

That does not change the in-game roadmap, but it matters for third-party sites and competitive tracking. Without API match history access, external tools may have a much harder time building reliable Classic profiles, match databases, scouting pages or public stat breakdowns.

For a mode built partly around discovery, that could be intentional. A less transparent data environment may make Classic feel closer to old League, when optimal builds spread through streams, forums and word of mouth rather than instant stat aggregation.

Riot's Classic showmatch shows why balance may move fast

The League Classic showmatch gave an early look at how strange the mode can feel beside modern League. Casters highlighted old champion versions, mana costs, gold-per-10 items, older jungle behavior, fragile turrets and familiar power spikes from champions such as Kassadin, Skarner, Corki, Alistar and Vayne.

The match also showed why regular balance updates are likely necessary. Classic has fewer modern safety valves, fewer mobility tools and a very different combat rhythm. Strong point-and-click crowd control, old item spikes and older scaling patterns can decide games quickly if they are not monitored.

The showmatch also underlined one of Riot's central challenges. Classic needs to feel broken in the right ways, but not so solved or frustrating that the same few champions dominate every lobby.

Player reactions are already split on how far Classic should go

The roadmap has been welcomed by many players who wanted proof that League Classic would receive more than a launch patch. The promise of three champions in the first follow-up update has also surprised some fans who expected a much slower release cadence.

At the same time, the conversation is already moving beyond the first roadmap. Some players want Riot to eventually add every pre-Yasuo champion, while others worry that too many assassins or later-era kits could weaken the slower, rougher identity that makes Classic appealing in the first place.

League Classic Roadmap reaction on Reddit

There is also interest in whether Riot could eventually adapt newer champions for Classic or revive old map and mode ideas. For now, Riot has only committed to the roadmap through Patch 26.20, but the addition of Council Voting suggests the mode's future may depend heavily on how active and vocal its early player base becomes.

When does Council Voting begin?

The first Council Voting round is listed for Patch 26.17 on August 26. A second round is planned for Patch 26.19 on September 23.

Will League Classic get balance updates?

Yes. Riot's roadmap says balance changes will come on every patch, giving Classic its own ongoing tuning instead of leaving the launch version untouched.

Will League Classic have match history?

What to watch after the first Classic patch

The first League Classic Roadmap makes Riot's direction clear. Classic is launching as a throwback mode, but it is being managed like a live product with balance changes, staged roster additions and player-guided voting.

The next major test arrives on August 12, when the first three post-launch champions join the roster. After that, August 26 will show how much influence Council Voting can really have over the mode's direction.

For now, the key question is not whether League Classic can create nostalgia. It is whether Riot can keep that nostalgia playable once modern players start solving the old game all over again.
